Logback documentation explains how to initialize the logging system and
namely how the `logback.configurationFile` system property can be used to
specify the configuration file to use.
Spring Boot has an abstraction on top of that. A user can define the
`logging.path` property regardless of the logging infrastructure it is
using.
Users following the logback documentation can be confused at first so
we're not logging a warning when we found out that the logback specific
property has been specified.

<appname>.log to capture the application's console output. This commit
adds a variable, LOG_FILENAME, for specifying the file name defaulting
to <appname>.log.

Commit adf2c44b was an attempt to prevent HSQLDB from throwing an
exception when the JVM exits. This was achieved by disabling the
application context’s shutdown hook in the tests. This had the unwanted
side effect of causing tests’ application contexts not to be closed. The
reported symptom was that @Destroy methods were no longer being invoked.
We need a different solution to the problem.

I originally thought this was due to a race between the application
context’s shutdown hook and HSQLDB’s shutdown hook, however HSQLDB
doesn’t use a shutdown hook. I believe that the problem is due to
an HSQLDB database being created with shutdown=true in its URL, similar
to the problem described here [1]. This will shut down the database when
the last connection to it is closed, however the shutdown will happen
asynchronously. If the JVM then runs the application context’s shutdown
hook, EmbeddedDatabaseFactory will attempt to connect to the database to
execute the SHUTDOWN command. This executes synchronously but will race
with the asynchronous shutdown that’s executing as a result of
shutdown=true in the JDBC url and the last connection to the database
being closed.
This commit reinstates the use of application context shutdown hooks in
the tests, and updates the documentation to recommend that, if a user
manually configures the URL for their embedded database, they do so
in such a way that the database doesn’t shutdown automatically, thereby
allowing the shutdown to be driven by application context close.

Spring Security 4’s default configuration will, irrespective of any
other header writers that are added, enable writers for the following
headers:
- X-Content-Type
- X-XSS-Protection
- Cache-Control
- X-Frame-Options
Previously, SecurityProperties.headers used false as the default for the
properties that enable or disable these headers but the configuration is
only applied when the properties are true. This left us with the right
default behaviour (the headers are enabled) but meant that the
properties could not be used to switch off the headers.
This commit changes the defaults for the four properties to true and
updates SpringBootWebSecurityConfiguration to only apply the
configuration when the properties are false. This leaves us with the
desired defaults while allowing users to disable one or more of the
properties by setting the relevant property to false.

So far we have wrongly advertized that the `spring-boot-starter-parent`
filters application configuration in such a way that standard Spring
placeholders are not processed.
In order to achieve such feature, the `useDefaultDelimiters` property
must be set to `false` as otherwise default delimiters are appended to
the list of custom delimiters.
This property is not enabled so that only keys surrounded by `@` are
filtered by the build.

Prior to 8.0.28 Tomcat required the key store and trust store (if any)
to be available directly on the filesystem, i.e. classpath: resources
would not work. Tomcat 8.0.28 removed this limitation.
This commit updates to Tomcat 8.0.28, updates the tests to verify
the new Tomcat capability and removes the obsolete documentation of
the restriction.

Previously, if Solr 5 was on the classpath, SolrAutoConfiguration
would fail with a rather cryptic error message due to a change in the
inheritance hierarchy of CloudSolrServer between Solr 4 and Solr 5.
This commit updates SolrAutoConfiguration to be conditional on a
class that exists in Solr 4 but was removed in Solr 5. This has the
effect of switching off the auto-configuration when Solr 5 is on
the classpath, allowing the auto-configuration report to be used to
identify why the configuration was disabled. The documentation has
also been updated to state that Spring Boot does not currently support
Solr 5.0.

This commit adds a new property, logging.register-shutdown-hook, that
when set to true, will cause LoggingApplicationListener to register
a shutdown hook the first time it initializes a logging system. When
the JVM exits, the shutdown hook shuts down each of the supported
logging systems, ensuring that all of their appenders have been
flushed and closed.

This commit adds the option to output the banner using the logger
instead of standard out. Rather than taking a boolean
spring.main.show-banner is now configured using an enum. Three values
are supported:
- LOG: the banner is logged
- CONSOLE: the banner is printed to standard out (previously true)

The default behavior remains unchanged; the banner will be printed to
standard out.

Add `error.include-stacktrace` configuration option to determine when
stack trace attributes should be added. Options are `never`, `always`
or `on-trace-param`.
Prior to this commit stacktrace attributes were never includes in HTML
responses, and only included in JSON responses when a `trace` request
parameter was set to `true`. This has now been changed so that,
by default, stacktrace attributes are never included.
The BasicErrorController includes a protected method that can be
overridden if includes should be different depending on the `produces`

Spring MVC requires all handlers for the same path to be on the same handler
so if anyone wants to add new handlers for different content types they
have to copy a lot of code from BasicErrorController. This change increases
the visibility of the basic utility methods in BasicErrorController so that
custom handlers can be added easily.

This commit adds a new annotation, @ServletComponentScan, that can be
used to enable scanning for @WebFilter, @WebListener, and @WebServlet
annotated classes. Registration beans will be automatically created for
any classes that are found, with the configuration derived from the
annotation.
Previously, native cache libraries were favored over a standard JSR-107
implementation. If a user has a working setup using JCache with one
provider and switch to another provider, his setup may be broken if we
happen to provide a native support for the new provider.
We now consistently favor JSR-107 if it is present. Native support can
still be enabled via the `spring.cache.type` property.

Previously, manual meta-data were added to the existing set of entries
which could lead to duplicates if a manual entry is meant to complement
a property that is detected via the processor.
We now match the name and type of the item against the auto-detected
entries. If no match is found, we add the extra entry as we did before.
If a match is found we override the description, default value and
deprecation information.

(the HAL browser) or JSON depending on the request’s accept header
that enables discovery of all of the actuator’s other endpoints.
When the management context path is configured, the /actuator endpoint
moves to the configured path, e.g. if the management context path is
set to /management, the actuator endpoint will be available from
/management.

This commit adds a new property, logging.exception-conversion-word,
that can be used to configure the conversion word that is used when
logging exceptions. The default value, %rEx, will log exceptions
with the root cause first and include class packaging information in
the stack trace. The new property is supported when using either

Previously, only folders on the classpath would be watched and used
to trigger a restart/reload of the application. This commit adds a
new property spring.devtools.restart.additional-paths that can be
used to configure additional paths that should be watched for
changes. When a change occurs in one of those paths a restart or
reload will be triggered, depending on the full restart exclude
patterns configured via the existing spring.devtools.restart.exclude
property.

Three conditions must be met for the console to be enabled:
- H2 is on the classpath
- The application is a web application
- spring.h2.console.enabled is set to true
If spring-boot-devtools is on the classpath, spring.h2.console.enabled
will be set to true automatically. Without the dev tools, the enabled
property will have to be set to true in application.properties.
By default, the console is available at /h2-console. This can be
configured via the spring.h2.console.path property. The value of this
property must begin with a '/'.
When Spring Security is on the classpath the console will be secured
based on the user's security.* configuration. When the console is
secured, CSRF protection is disabled and frame options is set to
SAMEORIGIN for its path. Both settings are required in order for the
console to function.

Currently, the default TemplateResolver had no specific order. Thymeleaf
handles that with a "always first" strategy (that can be confusing if
several TemplateResolver have a "null" order.
While it is a fine default (and changing it could lead to weird side

is defined in the project.
The `spring.thymeleaf.template-resolver-order` property has been added to
control the order of the default TemplateResolver.

A RepositoryRestMvcConfiguration subclass provided by a user is
problematic in a Spring Boot application as it causes
RepositoryRestMvcConfiguration's bean declarations to be processed
before any auto-configuration runs.
One problem that this causes is that it switches off Boot's Jackson
auto-configuration due to RepositoryRestMvcConfiguration having
already declared multiple ObjectMapper beans. Unlike Boot's
auto-configured ObjectMapper, none of these ObjectMappers are marked
as @Primary. This then leads to wiring failures due to multiple
candidates being available.
To address this problem a new RepositoryRestConfigurer abstract has been
introduced in Spring Data Gosling. Its use is now strongly preferred
over subclassing RepositoryRestMvcConfiguration. Note that our own
RepositoryRestMvcConfiguration subclass remains. It is imported as part
of auto-configuration (avoiding the ordering problems described above),
and provides configuration properties binding for
RepositoryRestConfiguration. However, the Jackson ObjectMapper
configuration has been moved out into a new RepositoryRestConfigurer
implementation.
While SpringBootRepositoryRestMvcConfiguration remains, this commit
makes it package private to discourage users from subclassing it. While
this may break existing applications, it, coupled with the documentation
updates, will hopefully guide them toward using
RepositoryRestConfigurer.

Previously, the Spring Boot Gradle plugin would always apply the
application plugin to a project. It then piggy-backed on the application
plugin’s mainClassName and applicationDefaultJvmArgs properties for the
configuration of the bootRun task.
This commit updates the Spring Boot Gradle plugin so that it no longer
applies the application plugin. If the user applies the application
plugin then its configuration will be used, but it’s a no longer
requirement.
Users who do not need the application plugin, but who were using the
mainClassName or applicationDefaultJvmArgs properties will need to
change their builds as a result of this change as those properties will
no longer exist. As before, the mainClassName can be configured on the
springBoot extension:

Embedded MongoDB is now auto-configured when it is on the classpath.
The Mongo instance will listen on the port specified by the
spring.data.mongodb.port property. If this property has a value of
zero and randomly allocated port will be used. In such an event, the
MongoClient created by MongoAutoConfiguration will be automatically
configured to use the port that was allocated.
By default, MongoDB 2.6.10 will be used. This can be configured using
the spring.embedded-mongodb.version property. Mongo's sync delay
feature is enabled by default. This can be configured using the
spring.embedded-mongobd.features property.

Previously, an item could only have a 'deprecated' boolean flag to
indicate that the property is deprecated. It is desirable to provide an
additional description for the deprecation as well as the name of the
property to use instead.
The `deprecated` boolean flag is now supported. Instead, a `deprecated`
object can be specified with two optional attributes: `reason` to provide
an explanation for the deprecation and `replacement` to refer to the
property that should be used instead. If none of them is present, an
empty deprecation object should be set.
For backward compatibility, the `deprecated` field is still set.
Deprecation information can only set via manual meta-data.

integration tests actually had a bug that was masking this problem
because they were merging Properties from the whole classpath instead

`Resource` but cannot be defined as such as the original String value
should be kept against an API we don't control.

If spring-hateoas is on the classpath and an MvcEndpoint returns a
@ResponseBody it will be extended and wrapped into a Resource with links.
All the existing endpoints that return sensible JSON data can be extended

Actuator endpoints are available as a separate jar file, which if

There is a new spring.factories entry for
org.springframework.boot.actuate.autoconfigure.EndpointWebMvcConfiguration
which loads extra beans into the MVC config for the Actuator.
If the management context is a child context all the beans go in the
child (except the Spring Security filter still). A big bonus is that
you can add WebConfigurerAdapters to configure static resources etc.
A new component called ManagementContextResolver can be used to
locate the ApplicationContext for the MVC endpoints.

This commit improves support of the Resource Handling features
introduced in Spring Framework 4.1. Those features add new ways to
resolve and transform static resources in applications.

The `ResourceUrlEncodinFilter` is added for compatible template engines:
Velocity and Thymeleaf. It assists them with rewriting the URLs of
static resources when rendering templates.
New keys are added in the `ResourceProperties` in order to configure
the Resource Handling chain. `ResourceResolvers` and
`ResourceTransformers` are registered accordingly in
`WebMvcAutoConfiguration`.
Here is an example of enabling a `ContentVersionStrategy` on all
static resources, meaning their names will be changed for cache
busting purposes by adding a content hash at the end of the file name.

have a description.

Users can add @ExportMetric[Reader,Writer] to readers and writers that
they want to participate in the default exporter. There is also still an
@ActuatorMetricWriter that is used for the legacy (non-Java8) Gauge and

The redis export and aggregate use case is a lot nicer with this
shared data between the two component types.
Also made MetricExportProperties itself a Trigger (so the default
delay etc. can be configured via spring.metrics.export.*).
Remove `spring.cache.config` as it is too generic and does not express
enough what is configured. This property is replaced by cache library

User can enable OAuth2 SSO by declaring the intent (@EnableOAuth2Sso)
and also configuring the client properties (spring.oauth2.client.*).
The spring.oauth2.sso.* are only needed to change the path for the
login (defaults to /login) - any other security configuration for the
protected resources can be added in a WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter
which carries the @EnableOAuth2Sso annotation.

This commit adds CORS support to the Actuator’s MVC endpoints. CORS
support is disabled by default and is only enabled once the
endpoints.cors.allowed-origins property has been set.
The new properties to control the endpoints’ CORS configuration are:

Different physical sources for the same logical metric just need to
publish them with a period-separated prefix, and this reader will
aggregate (by truncating the metric names, dropping the prefix).
Very useful (for instance) if multiple application instances are
feeding to a central (e.g. redis) repository and you want to
display the results. Useful in conjunction with a
MetricReaderPublicMetrics for hooking up to the /metrics endpoint.
This seems pretty efficient (approx 12M write/s as opposed to 2M with
the DefaultCounterService). N.B. there is no need to change most of
the rest of the metrics stuff because metrics are write-often, read-
seldom, so we don't need high performance reads as much.
The Spring Integration configuration and Dropwizard support has changed
a bit. Functionally very similar and probably opaque to users, but now
the messaging operates as an Exporter on a @Scheduled method, and
Dropwizard is a replacement [Gauge,Counter]Service.
Metrics are all
collected live in-memory (and can be very fast with Java 8), buffered
there and shipped out to a MessageChannel (if one exists with id
"metricsChannel") in a background thread.
We can still use Java 8 library APIs (like LongAdder) but to compile
to java 7 compatible byte code we have to forgo the use of lambdas :-(
and shorthand generics (<>).

Some of the features of the launch.script were not exposed for users
to be able to control at runtime. It now accepts things like
PID_FOLDER and LOG_FOLDER as environment variables, and also adopts
a clear naming convention where only the inputs are UPPER_CASE.
For reasons that I don’t understand, Maven has decided to stop running
the javadoc:jar task as part of the package phase. It appears to be
related to the addition of the build-helper plugin in
spring-boot-dependencies. Binding javadoc:jar to the prepare-package
phase convinces Maven to run it, apparently without any unwanted side
effects.
Previously, the CLI’s dependency management used proprietary Properties
file-based metadata to configure its dependency management. Since
spring-boot-gradle-plugin’s move to using the separate dependency
management plugin the CLI was the only user of this format.
This commit updates the CLI to use Maven boms to configure its
dependency management. By default it uses the spring-boot-dependencies
bom. This configuration can be augmented and overridden using the new
@DependencyManagementBom annotation which replaces @GrabMetadata.

The plugin publishing process has moved to a new plugin-based approach
that brings with it some significant limitations:
- There's no staging to allow the promotion of good release builds
- There's no easy way to upload an existing artifact
- There's no control over the published pom.
The risk brought by these limitations, particularly the first, are
too great so we will no be publishing the Boot plugin to the Portal
until they're resolved.
Changing the plugin's ID was a breaking change that would require
users to do some work when they upgrade to Boot 1.3. The ID of the
plugin was changed purely so that it met the Portal's requirements.
Given that the plugin will not be published to the Portal for the
foreseaable future there's no need for us to inflict a breaking change
on people when there will be no benefit.

Add an event that indicates the Spring Application has fully started and
is now ready to service requests. While ContextRefreshEvent provides
such hook for a regular spring application, this dedicated event is
triggered once all callbacks have been processed and right before the
context is returned to the caller. Besides, such event is triggered once
per application, regardless of the number of (child) contexts that could
have been created.

ConnectionFactory pools created by Atomikos and Bitronix via the
environment. The property prefixes vary depending on the transaction
manager that’s in use. They are:

This commit adds support for configuring Log4j 2 with YAML. It also
improves the existing support for configuring Log4j 2 with JSON.
Previously, Log4J2LoggingSystem returned a hard-coded list of standard
config locations that includes both JSON and XML file suffixes. Log4j
2’s support for JSON configuration files requires Jackson’s ObjectMapper
to be on the classpath so, in its absence, the standard config locations
were incorrect.
This commit updates Log4J2LoggingSystem to return an array of standard
config locations based on what’s on the classpath. It also updates the
documentation to describe the additional dependencies that are required
to enable YAML or JSON-based configuration.

In a properties file, a backslash is used as an escape character for
the line terminator sequence to allow values to be split across
multiple lines. When a backslash is used elsewhere they're stripped
out of the property's value.

are retained in the property's value at runtime.

By default, when /health is accessed anonymously, the details are
stripped, i.e. the response will only indicate UP or DOWN. Furthermore
the response is cached for a configurable period to prevent a denial
of service attack.

allowed, the details will be included in the response and the response

Jackson (and GSON). The property names implied that it would configure
all HTTP mapping, however it was ignored by GsonAutoConfiguration.
This commit deprecates the support for http.mappers.* in favour of
configuring Jackson or Gson instead. Jackson can be configured
declaratively using the spring.jackson.* properties or programtically.
Gson can be configured programatically by using a GsonBuilder to
create a Gson instance with the desired configuration.

If a Gradle build is using the Spring Boot Gradle plugin's support for
declaring dependencies without versions then they will be unable to
publish Maven artifacts from the build as the Gradle-generated pom
will fail to validate. This is because Gradle doesn't apply the
Boot-provided dependency versions to the dependencies in the generated
pom.
This can be addressed by configuring Gradle to generate a pom that
either imports spring-boot-dependencies into its dependency management
or that uses spring-boot-starter-parent as its parent. This commit
updates the documentation to document the need for this configuration
and to provide examples of how to do so.

Traditionally, a @ServerEndpoint-annotated bean is found by a servlet
container initialiser, however Boot does not run servlet container
initialisers when an embedded container is being used. To be able to use
@ServerEndpoint in a Boot app that uses embedded Tomcat a
ServerEndpointExporter bean must be declared.
This commit updates the documentation to describe this requirement and
also updates the WebSockets sample to illustrate the use of
ServerEndpointExporter. The version of Spring Framework has been updated
to 4.0.8.BUILD-SNAPSHOT. This picks up the fix for SPR-12340.

Previously, Spring Security's filter had no configured order. Due to
the use of AnnotationAwareOrderComparater this meant that its order
defaulted to LOWEST_PRECEDENCE. This meant that a user had to declare
a FilterRegistrationBean for the filter and explicitly set its order
if they want another filter to run after Spring Security's.
This commit updates the security auto-configuration to assign a
default order of zero to Spring Security's filter, allowing filters
to be easily configured to run before it or after it. This default
value can overridden using the server.filter-order property. The
default order is also exposed as a constant on SecurityProperties,
allowing it to be referenced from other filter declarations.

Previously, Bitronix's server ID was hard-coded to be
spring-boot-jta-bitronix. This created the possibility of multiple
transaction managers performing recovery on each other's behalf as
they would be unable to identify their own XIDs due to the common
server ID.
This commit reinstates the default (which is the IP address of the
machine on which Bitronix is running), and introduces a new
property, spring.jta.transaction-manager-id, that can be used to
configure the id for both Atomikos and Bitronix. A cautionary note
has also been added to the documentation for Atomikos and Bitronix
explaining the need to configure this property.

This commit introduces support for Jackson based XML serialization, using the
new MappingJackson2XmlHttpMessageConverter provided by Spring Framework
4.1. It is automatically activated when Jackson XML extension is detected on the
classpath.
Jackson2ObjectMapperBuilder is now used to create ObjectMapper and XmlMapper
instances with the following customized properties:
- MapperFeature.DEFAULT_VIEW_INCLUSION is disabled
- DeserializationFeature.FAIL_ON_UNKNOWN_PROPERTIES is disabled
JodaModuleAutoConfiguration and Jsr310ModuleAutoConfiguration have been removed
since their behaviors are now handled directly by the ObjectMapper builder.
In addition to the existing @Bean of type ObjectMapper support, it is now
possible to customize Jackson based serialization properties by declaring

In some scenarios, the ErrorPageFilter will want to forward the request
to an error page but the response has already been committed. One common
cause of this is when the filter’s running on WAS. WAS calls
flushBuffer() (which commits the response), upon a clean exit from a
servlet’s service method.
Previously, the filter would attempt the forward, even if the response
was committed. This would result in an IllegalStateException and a
possibly incomplete response that may also have an incorrect status
code.
This commit updates the ErrorPageFilter to check to see if the response
has already been committed before it attempts to forward the request to
the error page. If the response has already been committed, the filter
logs an error and allows the container’s normal handling to kick in.
This prevents an IllegalStateException from being thrown.
This commit also updates the response wrapper to keep track of when
sendError has been called. Now, when flushBuffer is called, if
sendError has been called, the wrapper calls sendError on the wrapped
response. This prevents the wrapper from suppressing an error when the
response is committed before the request handling returns to the error
page filter.

Spring Data Redis 1.4.0 introduced Redis Sentinel support. When
specified, RedisConnectionFactory uses the Sentinel configuration to
determine the current master.
Sentinel configuration can be specified using two new properties:

This commit improves DataSourceMetadata to expose the validation
query. This can be used by DataSourceHealthIndicator as the query
to use instead of "guessing" which query could be applied according
to the database type.

This commit adds an abstraction that provides a standard manner to
retrieve various metadata that are shared by most data sources.
DataSourceMetadata is implemented by the three data source
implementations that boot supports out-of-the-box: Tomcat, Hikari and
Commons dbcp.
This abstraction is used to provide two additional metrics per data
source defined in the application: the number of allocated
connection(s) (.active) and the current usage of the connection pool
(.usage).
All such metrics share the 'datasource.' prefix. The prefix is further
qualified for each data source:
* If the data source is the primary data source (that is either the
only available data source or the one flagged @Primary amongst the
existing ones), the prefix is "datasource.primary"
* If the data source bean name ends with "dataSource", the prefix is
the name of the bean without it (i.e. batchDataSource becomes batch)
* In all other cases, the name of the bean is used
It is possible to override part or all of those defaults by
registering a bean with a customized version of
DataSourcePublicMetrics.
Additional DataSourceMetadata implementations for other data source
types can be added very easily, check
DataourceMetadataProvidersConfiguration for more details.

This commit binds RepositoryRestConfiguration to the spring.data.rest
prefix so that any of its property can be customized through the
environment.
If a RepositoryRestMvcConfiguration is defined in the context, those
customization do not apply, as it was the case before.

Rework flexible PublicMetrics registration introduced in 2be6b3e4 to
restore compatibility with v1.1 VanillaPublicMetrics. The new
MetricReaderPublicMetrics class now exposes metrics from a MetricReader
and VanillaPublicMetrics is deprecated. The MetricsEndpoint can now
exposes a collection of PublicMetric interface directly.

This commit fixes some inconsistent or outdated keys in the
documentation. More specifically:
* allowSessionOverride is no longer a template parameter
* templateEncoding has been renamed to charSet
* Groovy templates do not have the same configuration hierarchy, hence
they don't share all settings
* spring.data.elasticsearch.local does not seem to exist
* flyway prefix and suffix should be sqlMigrationPrefix and suffix
* spring.rabbitmq.virtualHost had a typo
* endpoints.error.path is not a valid property
* shell.command-path-patterns had a typo
* spring.datasource.max-wait had a typo

This commit permits the use of several PublicMetrics instances by
default. Previously, only one PublicMetrics service could be specified
and a user configuration would remove all the defaulting.
VanillaPublicMetrics now takes a collection of PublicMetrics and
invokes them in sequence to build the final collection of metrics.
The system-related metrics have been moved to SystemPublicMetrics and
are registered by default.
Also updated the documentation to mention this feature and how it
could be fully overridden.
